Strait of Messina Area Itinerary
The first itinerary of the integrated ticket from the Calabria Cultura Pass project includes visits to the Museum and Archaeological Park of Bova Marina, the Metauros Archaeological Museum of Gioia Tauro, and the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria.
The control of the Strait of Messina in Antiquity was a fundamental objective for strategic, military and commercial purposes. What better opportunity to be able to embrace the area of the Strait from the Lower Tyrrhenian and Lower Ionian Sea with a central stop in Reggio Calabria? The museums in Gioia Tauro on the one hand and the museum and park in Bova Marina on the other allow, together with the Museum of Reggio Calabria, to retrace all of classical antiquity, from the first Greek foundations in Southern Italy –of which Metauros provides a unique insight for the richness of the burial goods of the 8th and 7th centuries. BC – to the late antiquity that emerges from the excavations of the Bova Marina park. Furthermore, the central stop is the Museum of Reggio Calabria, which tells the story of Calabrian prehistory and the archeology of Magna Graecia like no other museum in southern Italy and which preserves the wonderful and unique Riace Bronzes.
