Presentation of the book “The Others. The non-Greek populations of ancient Calabria”
On Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., in the conference room of the MArRC, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria will present the book Gli Altri. Le popolazioni non greche della Calabria antica (IX–III sec. a.C.) (The Others: The Non-Greek Populations of Ancient Calabria (9th–3rd centuries BC)) by Fabrizio Mollo.
The book offers a reinterpretation of the history of ancient Calabria, starting with the indigenous and Italic populations, often relegated to a marginal role in traditional narratives. Through an analysis based on literary sources, mythical traditions, and archaeological data, the volume reconstructs the interactions between the Greeks and the ‘Others’ from the Archaic period until the full establishment of Rome.
From Greek colonization to the crisis of the poleis, from the destruction of Sybaris to the arrival of the Lucanians and Brettii, up to the Hannibalic War, Bruzio emerges as an area of great cultural, economic, and political importance in the ancient Mediterranean. Ethnographic and socio-anthropological research contributes to a broader reflection on the identity of ancient Calabria, overcoming simplified interpretations and established stereotypes.
After institutional greetings from Fabrizio Sudano, director of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, Daniela Costanzo and Massimo Cultraro will engage in a dialogue with the author.
Admission is free until all seats are filled.
