MArRC and Living Camera revolutionize the museum experience with augmented reality

The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio together with Living Camera – communication agency -, announce the launch of a new museum experience in augmented reality, presented this morning as part of an event at the MArRC terrace. It is an application – developed as a pilot platform – that enriches the exhibition path with interactive digital content, opening up new possibilities to combine technology with the enjoyment of cultural heritage.

The project “FARM – Augmented Reality Training and Museums” was carried out by Living Camera S.r.l. and promoted by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Digital Transition measure for Cultural and Creative Organizations, financed by the European Union – Next Generation EU to explore and gain knowledge of new communication languages.

The initiative involved experts in the field and ten talented young people from Calabria, who have acquired multidisciplinary knowledge for the development of applications and related content in augmented reality applied to Calabrian archaeological and cultural heritage.

The application – available for iOS and Android – is the concrete result of this project. “The commitment in this initiative represents a fundamental step for the valorization of cultural heritage through technological innovation – said Fabrizio Sudano, Director of MArRC – The MArRC has always had the goal to combine past and future, Creating engaging experiences that can reach and enrich an ever wider audience. The introduction of augmented reality is not only an experiment, but a real strategic project that allows us to create a bridge between our extraordinary archaeological heritage and the new generations and not only.

We are convinced that this type of approach represents the future of museology, opening new frontiers in the enjoyment and understanding of our past. We are proud to be a partner in this project and thank Living Camera for choosing MArRC for the pilot”.

Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in an interactive experience thanks to 3D reconstructions, historical insights and visual narratives of selected works together with the Museum officials. Through an intuitive and accessible interface, the app allows you to explore exclusive content in augmented reality directly on your smartphone or tablet, enriching your visit without taking your attention away from the real route. Available in multiple languages, with subtitles and audio descriptions, the app ensures an inclusive and open experience to all, with the possibility of implementing new features for ever wider and more engaging access.

Through the use of augmented reality, the initiative therefore aims to reach a diverse audience, making the Museum a living and accessible place where every visitor has the opportunity to enjoy our cultural heritage through an immediate and enriching experience.

The project is part of a programme to enhance heritage through innovation, with the aim of creating a model that can be replicated in other museum contexts. The application will, in fact, be constantly updated to integrate new content and features, making the experience more rich and dynamic.

The successful presentation confirms the role of MArRC and Living Camera in digital innovation applied to cultural goods, strengthening the dialogue between tradition and technological avant-garde.

The app will be available for free on Apple Store and Google Play from 05 April 2025.
