Archaeological Museum Reggio Calabria, digitized 12 thousand finds. Objects found in the ancient Rhegion. Construction site with funds Pnrr
The National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria has completed the digitization of more than 12,000 museum assets largely related to the sanctuary of ancient Rhegion, “Griso-Laboccetta”. A site, the first completed, which sees the Reggino museum leading a larger project involving other Calabrian archaeological museums, realized within the framework of PNRR and coordinated by the Central Institute for the Digitization of Cultural Heritage – Digital Library of the Ministry of Culture. “A work that for us is a reason for great knowledge and protection, but also of new use and new proposals to enhance our findings – explained the director of MArRC Fabrizio Sudano -. The site is now continuing with the digitization of all the resources we had in our photo archive. Exceptional images that date back to the excavations of the end of the nineteenth century, made by Paolo Orsi”. The digitisation operations, entrusted to the Maggioli Consortium, were carried out by Sinapsys – a company of the Maggioli Group – and by Maggioli Cultura e Turismo. The activities are financed by the Sub-investment M1C3 1.1.5 – “Digitisation of cultural heritage” and are part of the strategic actions outlined in the National Plan for the Digitalisation of Cultural Heritage (Pnd), which is the strategic vision with which the Ministry intends to promote and organize the process of digital transformation in the five-year period 2022-2026, addressing in the first instance museums, archives, libraries, central institutions and state cultural centres which possess, protect, manage and exploit cultural goods. “After Reggio Calabria and Lamezia Terme, which we have already completed, we will continue with the National Museum of Vibo Lamezia and Gioia Tauro, and this makes us proud – said Sudano – for the record acquired compared to other Italian regions that are still a little behind”. The thousands of catalogued and digitised artefacts will be studied. “It is a moment of great knowledge – added Sudano – of material that was in the stores and of which we did not have full count. Press publications and exploitation projects can be considered later.”. “A process that also involves other institutes of the Regional Direction Museums whose objective will be to acquire over 28 thousand digital objects – explained Daniela Costanzo, archaeologist of MArRC -. The digitized materials in Reggio Emilia come from the sanctuary ‘Griso-Laboccetta’ which is a very important sanctuary of the ancient Reghion, discovered at the end of the nineteenth century, but little known. This is therefore an opportunity to learn about and launch new research projects”. “We have succeeded, in this site, which is part of another 127 national site, – said Cinzia Gallo, business manager and contact person for the Digital Library of the Ministry of Culture – to bring people forward. The ambitious challenge was to produce high numbers, 12,000 digital assets in a short time. Thus maintaining the times dictated by the PNRR, maintaining the quality criteria established by the specifications that could not be disregarded. We succeeded because of the synergy that was created between the institute, the contractors and the ministry”.
