Magna Grecia Roots Tribute: ancient heritage in the imagination of Gianni Versace
From December 19 to April 19, the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria presents “Gianni Versace. Terra Mater – Magna Graecia Roots Tribute,” an exhibition dedicated to the deep connection between the great fashion designer and the cultural roots of his homeland. The exhibition explores the link between fashion, archaeology, and Mediterranean identity, bringing the symbolic power of Magna Graecia and its influence on Gianni Versace’s imagination back to the forefront.
On display is a selection of clothes, accessories, furnishings, sketches, and images produced by the eclectic vision of the Reggio-born designer, with in-depth references to Greek and Roman classicism. Motifs inspired by Magna Graecia archaeological repertoires accompany visitors on a journey that intertwines contemporary glamour, myth, and the collective imagination.
The exhibition establishes a direct dialogue between Gianni Versace’s creations and artifacts from Calabrian sites. Materials, shapes, and iconography almost ‘overlap’, showing how the designer’s imagination was able to reinterpret classical tradition with a modern eye.
The exhibition will be a place for discussion through conferences, workshops, guided tours, and educational activities. Designers, art and fashion historians, photographers, and illustrators will explore the relationship between classical heritage and contemporary languages.
The museum spaces will allow visitors to appreciate the deep connection between Gianni Versace and the iconography of Magna Graecia thanks to:

The project reinforces the museum’s role as a meeting place between tradition and innovation, thanks to partnerships with schools, universities, and cultural institutes in the context of educational projects and PCTO (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation), offering a new and engaging interpretation of Calabria’s cultural heritage.
