The Cultural Heritage Code (Legislative Decree 42/2004) defines a museum as a permanent institution that acquires, catalogs, conserves, and exhibits cultural assets with educational and research purposes. The study of both tangible and intangible heritage is therefore central to its role, as the museum is a place of education and historical-cultural exploration.

Research at the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria is one of its core missions.
